The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to question specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
