Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
