Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
